RCA has an innovative daily French program that commences in our pre-Kindergarten program, Little Gems, and continues on up throughout the school.
Using a combination of Christ centred text books, French computer programs and a variety of mixed-media the RCA French teacher, Monsieur Hamel, works to teach each student to speak using the correct pronunciation and to write grammatically correct French. Students at RCA will enjoy more than 70 hours French instruction each year, well above the Ontario Ministry of Education recommendation of 30 hours.
The Little Gems/Kindergarten French program encourages the students to develop a love of languages at an early age through short periods of fun, and focus on songs, games, and stories about simple things that the children can grasp simply and easily. During these early years the children are able to easily absorb the simple words and concepts, allowing them to step into Grade school French with confidence and ease.
The Grade school French program takes a communicative approach that seeks to offer all the grades the opportunity to interact regularly in the French language. The entire school is introduced to the same basic conversations such as introductions, getting directions, and ordering food using the same basic vocabulary at the same time. While keeping the themes constant, the conversational vocabulary, sample sentences, and grammar are individually tailored by grade and ability to ensure that all the students are learning at their own pace. This innovative approach allows the students the confidence to speak to the teacher, their peers, and students in other grades in French.
