MAKERSPACE and RESOURCE

WHERE EXPLORATION AND DISCOVERY THRIVES!

The Makerspace Room at  RCA is a dynamic, hands-on learning environment designed to spark creativity, innovation, and problem-solving in young students. This room is filled with a variety of tools, materials, and resources that encourage exploration and experimentation across subjects like Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math.  STEAM is the expansion of STEM but with some art added in to bring more creativity into the experience.  The room is equipped with STEAM Stations on the outside and in the center of the room, you’ll find sturdy tables where students can work on projects, whether they are building with Lego, creating art, experimenting with simple machines or even having a game of chess.

The back wall is lined with a shelf and bins filled with Lego parts, a Makedo kit for cardboard projects and crafting materials that students can use to bring their ideas to life.

The room is designed to be flexible, with movable furniture that can be rearranged for different activities and group sizes. Students are encouraged to think creatively, work together, and challenge themselves as they design, build, and test their ideas.

The makerspace is a place where imagination knows no bounds, and students are free to dream big, learn through trial and error, and develop important skills like teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking.

Highlights of the activities and STEAM Stations:

  • Makedo kit, tools and lots of cardboard

  • Podcasting and vidcasting (future)

  • 3D printer and design station

  • 3D pen projects with templates

  • Maker exploration kits

  • Lego blocks and building materials

  • Sphero robot and coding options

  • Chess games and challenges

  • Art classes for grade 5 & 6

  • Sewing machine and fabric kits (coming soon)

  • Card making and scrap booking (coming soon)

For those interested in cutting-edge technology, the makerspace is equipped with a 3D printer for creating 3D objects from digital designs, and 3D pens that allow students to draw and build structures in mid-air. There are also plenty of LEGO bricks and Makedo kits, which let students build models, vehicles, and structures with ease using safe tools and reusable connectors using cardboard.

While we have several Sphero robots, one is available in the space. A Sphero robot is a small programmable round robot that can be controlled with tablets or smartphones. Students can use Sphero to explore coding, robotics, and problem-solving through fun, interactive challenges. Whether racing them through obstacle courses or programming them to perform specific tasks, Sphero robots offer an engaging way to introduce students to the basics of programming and STEM concepts.

The room also features a variety of maker kits that support hands-on learning in science, electronics, and engineering. These maker kits provide students with a rich, interactive way to explore engineering concepts and develop critical thinking skills.

For budding content creators, there’s a podcasting station with microphones, headphones, and recording equipment, allowing students to record their voices, tell stories, and create podcasts. It’s a great space for exploring digital media, audio editing, and storytelling.
